Colon Cancer Screening

E-mail Print PDF

Patients of Spectrum Health are being encouraged to participate in Colon Check, a screening program for colon cancer.

Everyday in British Columbia three people die of colon cancer. That makes it the second leading cause of cancer death in the province. But, if detected at its earliest stage, the chance of survival is over 90%.

Who is Eligible?

• Men & women age 50 to 74 years old

• No Crohn's disease or colitis

• No personal history of colon cancer

• No sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy in the past 5 years

How it Works:

Colon Check will send you a free, at-home test that will check for blood hidden in your stool (poop), a sign of non-cancerous polyps and early stage cancer. A polyp can be removed before it turns into cancer and colon cancer is easier to treat when found at an early stage.

How to Participate:

Just call 1-877-70-COLON (1-877-702-6566) to find out if Colon Check is right for you. You will need your Care Card number and about 5 minutes for this call. The test result will be mailed back to you and your family physician within 2 weeks of sending in your competed kit.

If you have any questions or concerns about this program, speak with your family physician, call:
